The Invisalign® orthodontic system involves the use of a series of custom-made, removable, clear aligners that are meant to be worn over your teeth for a period of 20 to 22 hours a day. Invisalign® aligners are a conservative alternative to traditional metal braces, and can be used to correct several dental issues including:
- Minor spacing issues
- Minor bite issues
- Mild to moderate crowding
- Mild to moderate misalignment
Although Invisalign treatment has advanced considerably to treat many cases of crooked teeth, patients with more severe dental issues may require more involved treatment. During your consultation, Dr. Sheila Mahooti will help you determine if Invisalign® is a good fit for you.
How it Works
Your Invisalign® aligners are custom-made with biocompatible materials to fit your teeth. The aligners are made from clear acrylic or plastic, which is one of the main benefits of Invisalign® over traditional metal braces, because it is nearly impossible to tell when you are wearing them
Dr. Mahooti will give you 3 to 4 sets sets that are meant to be changed every two weeks so that they can gradually straighten out your teeth. Each set of aligners is custom fitted to your mouth and your cosmetic dental needs..
Overall, the treatment with Invisalign® takes anywhere from 10 to 24 months, depending on your specific needs for correction.
How Do I Care For Invisalign®?
To care for your aligners, simply clean them with a soft toothbrush and rinse with warm water. Remove the aligners when eating and brushing your teeth. With Invisalign, you can continue to eat your favorite foods and maintain proper oral hygiene like normal, unlike traditional metal braces that place restrictions on what you can eat while wearing them and require special tools to clean all surfaces of your teeth properly.
Dr. Mahooti will give you more tips for cleaning and taking care of your Invisalign® aligners while you are undergoing the treatment.
