Restylane® and Perlane® are both dermal filler injections approved for the cosmetic treatment of fine lines and wrinkles. Perlane® is part of the larger Restylane® family of products.
How are Restylane® and Perlane® similar?
Restylane® and Perlane® are both very similar. They reduce the appearance of creases and wrinkles by smoothing them out through filling in and plumping up the targeted area. Each product is made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin that decreases over time due to aging and sun exposure.
Both products are a thick, soft gel (thicker than other dermal fillers) that has quick results. The results can last anywhere from six months to one year. Sometimes, more than one injection is necessary to achieve the desired results.
The side effects of each injection include temporary redness, swelling, and tenderness at the injection site. No downtime is required for either injection, and they are made without animal proteins, which minimizes the risk of an allergic reaction.
How are Restylane® and Perlane® different?
Both Restylane® and Perlane® are used primarily around the nose and mouth and can be used in other areas as well. However, Restylane® is also approved for lip enhancements in patients over 21 years of age, while Perlane® is not. And since Perlane® is made of larger gel particles, it works better on deep creases.
Restylane® is injected closer to the surface of the skin, making it more effective for mild to moderate wrinkles and lines. It is also good for signs of aging around the eyes.
